The
MidSouth Community College Fellowship Program (MCCFP)
was established in 1994 with assistance from the Phil
Hardin Foundation. Since 1995, participating colleges
and the Mississippi State Board for Community and Junior
Colleges have also provided substantial financial support.
Starting in 2001, MCCFP began to receive funding from
the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation (LPRV). The
additional assistance provided by LPRV enabled MCCFP
to develop and implement the Community Development Forum,
which focuses on economic development and business growth
within rural communities and the potential role of the
community college. Initially developed as a one-week
leadership program, MCCFP has evolved into an educational
program for current and past Fellows that lasts one
academic year. MCCFP is the first and only university
program in the state of Mississippi that focuses on
developing the future community college leadership workforce. It has proven to
be a successful vehicle for:
Encouraging a focus on rural community and economic
development
Providing
professional development
Promoting
university-community college relations
Involving
diverse agencies and individuals in the process of
preparing and supporting the next generation of community
college leaders
Empowering
community college faculty to engage the entrepreneurs
in their communities to help create more entrepreneurial rural
communities.
Making
available graduate credit
MCCFP
has grown substantially since its inception in 1994.
Future community college leaders have participated from
states throughout the mid-south region of the United
States, including Mississippi, Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas,
Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Thus far,
MCCFP has provided training for hundreds of community
college professionals. Cost per participant is $700
for Mississippi residents ($1,100 out-of-state), which
includes room and board for the Leadership Retreat held
each July at Lake Tiak OKhata Resort in Louisville,
Mississippi, and Fellows may earn three semester hours
of graduate credit at an additional cost and academic
assignment.

"Attending the MCCFP Leadership Retreat
last summer was one of the best activities of my professional
career. Not only did I learn about leadership, but I also
became a part of a great networking opportunity."
